After five years working in London, I decided it was time to move back to Los Angeles, but not before taking a year off to see the world. I gave up my great job with Lehman Brothers in Administration and a fantastic flat (and roommate) I’d lived in for over three years, packed up all my belongings into some 60 cubic feet of boxes and said farewell to the wonderful friends I made in London. Before setting off for Asia, I spent seven weeks in the States including a weekend getaway in Chicago with my best friends from high school, corrective eye surgery in Philadelphia, Aud and Rob’s wedding in Bermuda, 13 days in Israel on Birthright (with a side trip to Petra) and time in quiet Oak Park with my parents and sister. Then, on July 18, 2010 at 1am, with only 13 kilograms in my 50L backpack and a small shoulder bag, I boarded a flight to Singapore. The goal of my adventure is not one of self-discovery or mending a broken heart but a journey of true desire to explore the world, experience new cultures, taste various cuisines, explore beautiful wildernesses, meet local people, and maybe learn some Spanish along the way. What lies below are my stories (or more of a daily recount of events) from the road.

All the tea in China

Saturday, September 4, 2010
  • Started the day with coffee and (gross) chocolate muffin which dad brought back to the room for me
  • Met Julie in the hotel lobby and took a taxi to a very local food market – talk about fresh, we saw all types of live fish, birds, frogs, etc, all available for purchase; we watched as a woman de-scaled and gutted a fish which was still alive – something else
  • Dad tried some street food, a crepe-type thing with an egg, scallions, sauce - very tasty
  • Taxi to Old Shanghai, where we ran into the Dutch couple from the Expo
  • Lunch at DN, some local fast-food type place with an all Chinese menu; Julie ordered and about four people tried to help us find a table
  • Taxi to tea market; a woman, Catherine started speaking to us in English, so we went inside and sampled four types of tea; so much fun that we spent 1.5 hours there
  • French concession – beautiful buildings and posh restaurants; we ran into the German girl from the Bund
  • Walked back to Le Meridian and had a drink on 66th floor
  • Dinner at Old Shanghai Restaurant, say bye to Julie
  • Walked to Bund, beautiful at night but extremely crowded; ate some Haagen Dazs for dessert
  • Taxi back to hotel

Funny story: While we were walking on the Bund, a woman tapped me on the shoulder and asked for a picture.  Dad went to reach for the camera, but I told him that she wanted to take a picture of us with her boyfriend.  After the picture, dad turned to me shocked.  I informed him that all over the world people want to take pictures with us (I’ve been stopped in Egypt, Indonesia and Malaysia). He laughed and just couldn’t get over the idea.  Made me smile.
