After five years working in London, I decided it was time to move back to Los Angeles, but not before taking a year off to see the world. I gave up my great job with Lehman Brothers in Administration and a fantastic flat (and roommate) I’d lived in for over three years, packed up all my belongings into some 60 cubic feet of boxes and said farewell to the wonderful friends I made in London. Before setting off for Asia, I spent seven weeks in the States including a weekend getaway in Chicago with my best friends from high school, corrective eye surgery in Philadelphia, Aud and Rob’s wedding in Bermuda, 13 days in Israel on Birthright (with a side trip to Petra) and time in quiet Oak Park with my parents and sister. Then, on July 18, 2010 at 1am, with only 13 kilograms in my 50L backpack and a small shoulder bag, I boarded a flight to Singapore. The goal of my adventure is not one of self-discovery or mending a broken heart but a journey of true desire to explore the world, experience new cultures, taste various cuisines, explore beautiful wildernesses, meet local people, and maybe learn some Spanish along the way. What lies below are my stories (or more of a daily recount of events) from the road.

Penguin Spotting

Thursday, December 30, 2010

Our luck at Torres changed a bit this morning; the clouds finally rolled in.  Good thing we were on our way out!  Even though we weren't leaving until 10am, breakfast was at 8 since the campsite needed to be packed up.  Andy injured himself taking down one of the tents, so a few of the guys helped Ally and Mark take down camp.

As we drove out of Torres del Paine, Andy stopped at a couple of viewpoints, but none of us were interested given the excellent photos we'd taken on the way in (sin clouds).  Back to Puerto Natales for an hour and a half break to drop off Mark and unload the truck.  Kate, Ted and I enjoyed a rich hot chocolate at Patagonia Dulce before Nick and Sarah joined.  The sun had revealed itself and the weather was pleasant outside.

At 1:30pm we were back on Peggy for a three hour (not two) drive to the penguin colony at Seno Otoway.  There was a long boardwalk before reaching the penguins, giving them plenty of space to make their burrows.  We finally spotted one in the distance.  I was so excited I just starting snapping pictures.  As we continued on the walkway the penguins got closer, many with young babies who still had their brown coats.  Penguins are SO CUTE!  It was amazing watching them waddle along to and from the water.  One point looked out onto the beach where the penguins were swimming in and out of the water.  Fantastic!

When we arrived in Punta Arenas (the southernmost continental city in South America) at 7pm, everyone was itching for a shower.  I made a quick stop to look for laundry while Sarah showered, but came up empty handed.  I did find a restaurant that Ricardo recommended, so not all was lost from my short excursion.

Sarah and I decided to eat at La Luna and Nick and Brad chose to come along (they were originally going with Ally).  When we got to our upstairs table, Louise/Richard and Monica/Keith were sitting at the table behind us.  I ordered some kind of seafood cheesy baked dish, Nick got the same style but with crab, and Sarah and Brad had kingfish.  All the food was scrumptous and somehow the rest of the group had room for dessert.  I stuck with tea.

I handwashed some of my shirts when we got back and have been researching trip options online after having a small ephipany on the bus today about my route.  Might be changing things around a bit.  Looking forward to a free day tomorrow before New Years Eve.
